FAQ: All About Ledger Live

Your questions, answered. Find clear information on the Ledger Live app, from initial setup and security to advanced features and troubleshooting.

Is Ledger Live a wallet?

Not exactly. Ledger Live is an interface or software application. The actual "wallet" is your physical Ledger hardware device, which stores your private keys offline. Ledger Live is the secure app that allows you to interact with your assets on the blockchain without exposing those keys. Think of your Ledger device as the vault, and Ledger Live as the secure teller window you use to manage what's inside.

Can I use Ledger Live without a hardware wallet?

You can download Ledger Live and use it in "consultation mode" to view public blockchain addresses and track their value. However, you cannot send funds, sign transactions, or manage accounts without a connected and configured Ledger hardware wallet. The core security of the entire system relies on the hardware device to approve all critical actions.

What happens if I lose my computer or phone with Ledger Live?

Absolutely nothing happens to your crypto assets. Your funds are not stored in the Ledger Live app; they are on the blockchain, and access is controlled by your hardware wallet. You can simply download Ledger Live on a new device, connect your hardware wallet, and all your accounts and balances will be restored. This is a key benefit of self-custody.

What is a 24-word recovery phrase?

The 24-word recovery phrase (also called a seed phrase) is a master key to all your crypto assets. It's generated by your Ledger hardware wallet when you first set it up. This phrase is the only backup of your private keys. You must write it down and store it in a secure, offline location. Never share it with anyone or store it digitally. If you lose your hardware device, you can use this phrase to restore access to your funds on a new Ledger device.

Is the Ledger Live mobile app as secure as the desktop version?

Yes. The security model is identical. Whether you use the Ledger Live Mobile app via Bluetooth (with a Nano X) or the Ledger Live Desktop app via USB, every critical action (like sending funds) requires a physical confirmation on your secure hardware wallet. The app itself never holds your private keys, making both platforms equally secure for managing your assets.

Does Ledger Live support all cryptocurrencies?

Ledger Live natively supports a large and growing number of coins and tokens, including major assets like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and all ERC-20 tokens. For other assets not directly supported in the Ledger Live interface, you can still secure them with your Ledger device by using a compatible third-party wallet. Ledger devices themselves support over 5,500 assets, making them incredibly versatile.

What is the 'Manager' tab in Ledger Live?

The 'Manager' is a crucial section within the Ledger Live app. It is your control panel for the hardware wallet itself. In the Manager, you can: update your device's firmware, install and uninstall cryptocurrency apps (like the Bitcoin app or Ethereum app), and view your device's storage capacity.

Can I stake crypto directly in Ledger Live?

Yes, for many assets. Ledger Live provides a secure and integrated way to stake cryptocurrencies like Ethereum (ETH), Tezos (XTZ), Solana (SOL), and others. You can delegate your assets to validators directly from the app interface while your private keys remain secure on your hardware device. This allows you to earn rewards without compromising the security of your holdings.

How is my personal data handled by Ledger Live?

Ledger Live is designed with privacy in mind. The application does not have access to your private keys or recovery phrase. It synchronizes with the blockchain to display your balances and transaction history. While some anonymous usage data might be collected to improve the app, personal financial data remains under your control and is not shared with Keystone Digital or Ledger.
